What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?
The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) came into force in June 2024. It is a one-year residence permit that allows skilled workers from non-EU countries to come to Germany specifically to look for a job — without having a job offer first. This is a major change to Germany's immigration policy and one of the best opportunities Ghanaians currently have to legally move to Germany.
During the one-year period, you can work part-time (up to 20 hours/week) while you search for a full-time position in your field. Once you find a job, you switch to a standard work permit.
The Points System — Do You Qualify?
You need at least 6 points from the criteria below. A recognised university degree automatically qualifies you without points if you have a German language certificate at B1 level or higher.
Shortcut: If you have a degree recognised in Germany AND a German language certificate at B1 or above, you automatically qualify without needing the points system at all.
Required Documents
- Valid Ghanaian passport (at least 12 months validity beyond your intended stay)
- Academic degree certificate — apostilled and officially translated into German
- Proof of recognition of your qualification (from anabin database or direct recognition decision)
- Evidence of language skills (German language certificate OR IELTS/TOEFL for English)
- Proof of sufficient financial means — minimum €947/month (show bank statement with at least €11,364)
- Health insurance coverage valid in Germany
- Biometric passport photos
- Accommodation proof (even a temporary booking works for the application)
- CV and motivation letter
Degree Recognition — The Most Critical Step
Getting your Ghanaian degree recognised by German authorities is the most time-consuming part of the process. Start this step immediately — it can take 3–6 months.
- Check the anabin database (anabin.kmk.org) to see how Germany rates your degree and university
- If your degree is not fully recognised via anabin, apply for formal recognition through the Central Office for Foreign Education (KMK) or the relevant German professional body for your field
- Get your transcripts and degree certificate officially translated into German by a certified translator
- Have the documents apostilled at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra
Application Process
- Gather all required documents (start with degree recognition — this takes longest)
- Book an appointment at the German Embassy in Accra (visa appointments fill fast — book 2–3 months ahead)
- Submit your application and pay the visa fee (approx €75)
- Wait for approval — typically 8–12 weeks
- Once approved, book your flight and arrange temporary accommodation in Germany
- Register your address (Anmeldung) within 14 days of arriving in Germany
Important: You must have enough money to support yourself during the one-year job search — at minimum €947/month. This must be shown upfront. Germany will not grant the card if you cannot prove financial independence.
In-Demand Sectors for Ghanaians
Germany has severe shortages in engineering, healthcare, IT, construction, and skilled trades. Ghanaians with qualifications in any of these areas have the best chance of finding employment quickly after arriving:
- Mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical engineering
- Nursing, care work, and medical professions
- IT — software development, cybersecurity, data engineering
- Construction — project managers and site supervisors
- Logistics and supply chain management
